Nejirimanpo Tunnel

Nejirimanpo Tunnel

A tunnel going under the Keage Incline. The tunnel is made with bricks piled in a spiral manner, so appearing to be swirling. There are plaques at both ends of the tunnel. Engraved on the plaques are writings of Kunimichi Kitagaki: One saying “Yoki hassuru tokoro” (Where there is a will, there is a way), and the other “Yukan kiso” (Excellent view and unexpected idea). “Yoki hassuru tokoro” was quoted from words of Zhu Xi, a philosopher of the Southern Song Dynasty of China. Nejirimanpo Tunnel is a tunnel for pedestrians. Walking through the tunnel, you can feel the atmosphere of the Meiji Era (1868-1912).
