Piers at which the intake of water from the Lake Biwa to the First Canal is installed. There are the First Tsuiji and the Second Tsuiji. Prior to the construction of the First Canal, water gauges are installed at these places to observe the water level at Lake Biwa. Biwako Tsuiji is the birthplace of the boating club of the Third High School (presently Kyoto University). Also, there is a monument engraved with the words of the song “Biwako Shuko no Uta” (Lake Biwa Rowing Song) present at one of them. The juncture of Lake Biwa and Lake Biwa Canal is the starting point of the “Japan Heritage” story.
